The SEAOC SE Pathways Program was created to advance the practice of structural engineering in California by enhancing the pathway into and through the profession. Developed in response to the 2020 SEAOC Call to Action, this initiative focuses on recruitment and retention of individuals belonging to groups traditionally underrepresented in the structural engineering profession including, but are not limited to, first-generation college students, women, Black/African American, Native/Indigenous American, Hispanic/Latino, Pacific Islander, Asian, other people of color, LGBTQIA+, and people with disabilities.
Structural Engineers Association of California (SEAOC) is pleased to present an opportunity for structural engineering students and early-career professionals to participate in the Second SE Pathways Cohort kicking off at the 2023 SEAOC Convention in Maui, HI, September 6-9. The Cohort will meet with several members of the Inaugural 2022 Cohort in continued conversations between engineering students, early-career professionals and other practicing engineers to share ideas on enhancing the pathways into and through the profession of structural engineering in California.
With activities during the convention and throughout the following year the Pathways Program provides opportunities for aspiring or new engineers to network with colleagues and practicing professionals throughout the state of California; learn key issues impacting the SE profession, including the need to improve workforce equity and diversity; and meet trade representatives who may assist you in future practice. Most importantly, cohort members will help shape the future of Structural Engineering in California.
SEAOC encourages interested Students and Early Career Professionals, especially individuals belonging to groups traditionally underrepresented in the profession, to apply to join the 2023 SE Pathways Cohort.
- Students should be in at least their third year of undergraduate engineering (structural emphasis) studies.
- Early-career professionals should be within their first three years of structural engineering industry involvement and be members of SEAOC via membership in SEAOSC, SEAOSD, SEAOCC or SEAONC.

Thank you so much for an amazing experience at my first convention! I learned so much each day, and am excited to see what the future holds for myself as an engineer and member of SEAOC. The professional development tracks were especially insightful as a young professional. Being able to talk candidly with engineers farther along in their career was one of the best parts of the experience. I hope I can attend conventions in the future, and work my way into a mentor position to help future cohort members! Thanks again!
