Design Implications from Shake Table Test Response of Seismic Collectors in Steel Building Structures

Guest Speaker

Chao-Hsien Li, Ph.D.
Senior Research Engineer, CoreBrace, LLC, West Jordan, Utah, U.S.A.

David Ochoa
Project Engineer, CoreBrace, LLC,

Abstract:

Collectors are structural components that play a critical role to transmit inertial forces in the floor diaphragms to the vertical seismic-force resisting system in a building structure. Yet little research has been done on collectors. A two-phase experimental program was conducted on a half-scale, two-story steel building containing a composite slab floor and bare steel roof deck by using the NHERI@UCSD large high performance outdoor shake table (LHPOST) to investigate the inertial force paths in the floor diaphragms and the seismic behavior of collectors. Alongside this test program, an innovative shake table testing methodology was developed such that the absolute acceleration history response of any floor in a multi-story prototype building could be simulated by using single-story specimen. In this presentation, the development of the testing methodology, seismic response of collectors and their connections, and design implications on seismic collectors in steel buildings will be presented.

Bio:

Mr. Li is a Senior Research Engineer at CoreBrace, LLC. He is conducting analytical studies for the research and development of Buckling-Restrained Braces (BRBs). He received his Ph.D. from the UC San Diego in 2022. His research interests focus on earthquake-resistant design of steel structures with emphasis on large scale structural testing and numerical simulation of seismic response of steel structures. His doctoral research was on the seismic behavior and design of collectors in steel buildings, for which he conducted experiments that utilized the NHERI@UCSD large high performance outdoor shake table (LHPOST). Before returning to school to pursue doctoral studies, Chao-Hsien served as an assistant researcher in the Taiwan National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering (NCREE) for 9 years. His research work at NCREE was mainly on seismic design of Steel Plate Shear Wall systems.

David Ochoa is a Project Engineer at CoreBrace, LLC where he is responsible for coordinating with design professionals to assist with the implementation of the BRBF systems during the design development phase of a project.  Also, he provides this coordination service with Spanish-speaking professionals. David’s work includes the development of connection design aids, and the provision of BRB related design values in projects involving new construction and/or retrofit work. Additionally, he works closely with the steel fabricator to ensure that the BRB connections meet the design intent.
