Lessons from Deep Snow Country- Design and Detailing for Heavy Snow

Doug Gadow, SE - Linchpin Structural Engineering

  • Doug has been designing structures of all sizes and construction types in deep snow country for nearly 20 years, and has been exposed to a wide variety of failure mechanisms and load scenarios associated with the particular challenges of deep snow country. He has worked to develop best-practice standards for design and detailing of structures subject to heavy snow and educate his colleagues about unconsidered failure conditions. He currently sits on the ASCE7/SEI Snow Load Advisory Subcommittee and is actively involved in developing the standards to ensure the code adequately reflects real-world loading conditions.

Lisa Hartley, PE - Linchpin Structural Engineering

  • Lisa has worked with Doug for more than a decade and is highly experienced in designing structures for heavy snow loading, with an emphasis on detailing considerations and holistic building approaches with the goal of providing high end, resilient designs to all clients.
Doug and Lisa will be discussing the behavior and accumulation of snow in the high Sierra as it relates to structural loading. They will also review structural design and detailing considerations engineers can take to ensure adequate building performance under the extreme snow load conditions structures in our practice region are subjected to.
